News Opening Sequence Connotations

The opening sequence starts with an image of the world this connotes that the news they present is world wide and could also represent a Satellite which connects that they are up to date with technology. the opening sequence then rushes into to earth then showing London. this connotes that the news is immediate and urgent, also at this time fast paced and beaty music begins this also adds to the urgency of the opening sequence and also connotes that the news is immediate. after this the camera continuous to rush throw London and goes past the London Eye and then to Big Ben these are phallic symbols which connotes that the media is a very masculine. by going to Big Ben it also uses clocks which connotes urgency.

The Opening sequence then cuts the news readers, they are already behind their desks this connotes a sense of urgency, the news reader speaks in standard English accents and with received pronunciation this is seen as a neutral way to speak, other accents connote too much about the speaker. The news reader also uses direct address by speaking into the camera this connotes an unmediated communication, while speaking the news reader uses a limited range of facial expressions to reinforce the idea that the newsreader is offering no personal comment on the information. there may be a smile at the end or in a lighter and finally story, but this only reinforces the neutrality of what has gone before.

The mise en scene of the set is metallic and slick this suggests that they are modern and up to date. the background of the set is of the city at night showing that the news broadcast is live and the background also connotes impartiality but suggesting that the news is just looking through a window and not changing the stories. the clock overlay in the background also connotes urgency.
