Our First Continuity Sequence

This is a short evaluation for our first continuity project. We had a list of shots that we had to use to create our first short film and keep the continuity of the video in mind. Overall I thought the first video went well I thought we framed the shots well and kept the continuity of the shot well but in a few parts we made a few mistakes.
My favourite aspect of the video is how all the shots and edits flow together well, the shots and edits we used added to the effect like: Match on action, Eye line match and over the shoulder shots. For example in the final shots of Ollie running out of the room these shots flowed well throughout.

I also thought we used angles of the shots well.  The low angle in this shot adds to the maniacal look to Jack in this shot. The video has a lot of shot and angle variations; this keeps the viewer interested and keeps them watching the video. the low angle of jack shows the power of the character. the shot has ambient lighting but i think this shot would be better if used some artifical light, maybe low key lighting to add shadows,  to add the maniacal look and feel to this shot due to the low angle of the shot.

another thing i think went well was the music. this was incidental music and adds to the evil and dramatic tone to the movie.

Although in some parts of the video the shots caused the continuity to break. For example: In this shot when Ollie walked through the door the match on action shot of his hand opening the door was too short causing the shots to jump and this caused a break in the continuity. Another example of this is just after this shot Ollie’s face changes between the shots this also causes a break in the continuity of the video. Also when Ollie runs out of the room he briefly looks at the camera this breaks the fourth wall between the viewer world and the characters world. This is my least favourite aspect of the video.
I think that recording in general of the video went smoothly and the editing went well, but I think it could have went better with the cuts in the shot that breaks the continuity mentions in the last paragraph. Also when shooting we could have had a rolling start and recorded into the next shot to avoid the breaking of the continuity.
If we were to undertake this task again I feel that we could have improved on the jumps in the video and the breaks in the video by recording into the next shot like mentioned in the last paragraph. Also I think we could have used props and the area around us better as the video as the video is only using two props and just using one part of the room and the corridor. We could have reshot some of the scenes to fix the problems that we had. This is something that I have learnt and can use in the next project.

  1. Great work Connor. Please could you title it with something like "Our First Continuity Sequence". Also note that a match on action is an edit, not a shot.

  2. Connor,
A really nice first piece of written work with a good use of terms. You have linked some examples with reloevant terms but do not do this all the way through. You could amend this if you get the time. Great start.
